I like him a lot, as he is quite a charming story-teller.

He was the one, I expected to support me in applying for post-graduate studies abroad, but [2] I didn't try very hard in persuading him there, and my sense of humour and his one [3] are quite different, so when I asked him like, whether I could suppose, he wouldn't support me, he just answered with one of his famous one word sentences: “Yes”. Nowadays I know, I should not have let him escape that easily, but back in 1987 or so I was rather humiliated and just gave up on that.
There was actually quite a reason for my asking that negated question. There were a lot of young people at his GMD institute then, students and young graduates, and there existed only very, very little social competence to handle conflicts. And there were more than enough issues causing conflicts. E.g. the rather poor computer equipment for the students at his GMD institute, and students (me amongst them) fighting for time slots with those computers. There were also rather unwise identical project assignments to me and a pretty devious co-student (Harald F.) by one of the graduate students.

Jürgen Gulbins is the author of the first book on UNIX in Germany.
For a couple of years everybody [4] seemed to have that book.
Before that book Jürgen wrote Einfuehrung in die Benutzung der PDP 11 mit Betriebssystem RSX 11 M.
At one stage around 1982 or so he wanted to make me his successor at the computer science faculty, where he was in charge of Goos's nice UNIX equipment, but I had to admit, that I was quite far away from completing my studies, and I had to reject that suggestion than.
I worked for him around 1987 with PCS in Karlsruhe.
